Dr. Jonathan Chua, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S.

Jonathan Chua, M.D., Ph.D.Dr. Chua is the veteran physician at Florida Eye Microsurgical Institute and has diagnosed and treated thousands of patients over the years for a variety of eye conditions. Dr. Chua, a board certified ophthalmologist and fellow trained, specializes in glaucoma screenings, diabetic checks, cataract conditions and general eye exams and care.

Originally from China and the Philippines, Dr. Chua received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the State University in Iowa and obtained his Doctor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine. After completing his residency at the State University of Iowa, he became a Fellow on the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also the Director of the Florida Eye Foundation. In addition, he is affiliated with numerous organizations, including Bethesda Memorial Hospital.

In his early career as a chemist, Dr. Chua was part of a team of researchers that created AZT. The compound, originally slated to be used as an anticancer drug, was found to have antiviral activities, and instead won FDA approval to be used to treat patients with HIV. It was the first drug to be used in the treatment of AIDS in the United States.

Dr. Chua has published numerous articles detailing his studies and findings in chemistry and medicine over the years, including P-32 tests for the differential diagnosis of melanoma of the eye. He has been working side by side with his wife, Virginia, for many years. Dr. Chua’s daughter and nephew are also employed at Florida Eye, making it a true family affair for the doctor.
